Delivery Manager

A Delivery Manager helps a team (or several teams) get useful work out the door without burning people out. You keep an eye on speed, risk, blockers and whether everyone still knows what “finished” means. At Lead level you still dive into the hardest problems, but you also coach other delivery managers and keep the bigger plan joined up.

What this job is responsible for

  • Keeping several teams pointed at the same outcome, even when they barely meet
  • A pace people can sustain, and a clear Definition of Done
  • A tidy RAID log, honest RAG status, and written decisions people can trust
  • Coaching other delivery managers through their hardest weeks
  • Naming who depends on whom (RACI) so work does not get stuck between teams
  • Growing people’s skill so the team still works well when you are away

Signs things are going well

  • Teams ship small, useful slices of work instead of giant big-bang releases
  • RAG is honest early: watermelon reporting (green outside, red inside) gets called out
  • Every dependency has a named owner, a date, and a clear “if this slips…” consequence
  • Stand-ups raise blockers; retros end with one real change, not only venting
  • SROs get options plus a recommendation, and never hear bad news first in a big meeting
  • Newer delivery managers raise risks before you have to ask

How this role works with nearby roles

  • Product Owner: Chooses what value to chase and in what order. You help the team deliver that value at a pace they can keep up.
  • Scrum Master: Coaches one Scrum team’s day-to-day ways of working. You may coach several delivery managers or look across a whole programme.
  • Project Manager: Often owns the plan, budget and formal gates. You own healthy team delivery; share one RAID and reporting story so you do not double up.
  • Change Manager: Helps people adopt the new way of working. You deliver the thing being changed and coach the team so new habits stick.

Who this guide is for

New and experienced Delivery Managers, including people in UK Civil Service digital roles and anyone moving from one team to looking after several. Also useful outside government: the craft is the same even if the job title differs.
